Lexus Models Naming System Decoded

Lexus Models Naming System Decoded

Understanding how Lexus names their vehicles – a simple guide to their alphanumeric code system

What's in a Name?

Lexus vehicles follow a structured naming system that tells you a lot about the vehicle without seeing it. Think of it as a code where each part has a specific meaning.

For example, in RX 350h:

RX Tells us it’s a Radiant Crossover (medium-sized SUV)

350 Tells us about the engine size (3.5 liter)

h Means it’s a hybrid (uses electricity too!)

Why Automotive Naming Matters

Automobile manufacturers like Lexus use specific naming conventions to communicate important information about their vehicles in a consistent, efficient way.

Lexus uses an alphanumeric system where letters and numbers each carry specific meaning. Understanding this system allows you to quickly identify a vehicle’s class, size, and powertrain just from its model designation.

The First Two Letters = Vehicle Category

The first two letters in a Lexus name indicate the vehicle category and body style – similar to how clothing comes in different types for different purposes.

SUVs: UX, NX, RX, GX, LX

These range from compact to full-size luxury SUVs.

Sedans: IS, ES, LS

From compact sports sedans to executive luxury models.

Coupes: RC, LC

Performance-oriented luxury coupes.

The Numbers = Engine Performance

The numbers in a Lexus name (like 300, 350, 500) indicate the engine’s displacement or performance level, giving you an idea of power without looking at specifications.

200-300 = Entry-Level Engines

Like IS 300: Typically 2.0-3.0L engines with balanced power and efficiency.

350-450 = Mid-Range Engines

Like RX 350: Usually 3.5L V6 engines offering stronger performance.

500+ = Premium Engines

Like LS 500: Top-tier powerplants with maximum performance and refinement.

Special Letters = Additional Features

Lexus sometimes adds suffix letters to their model names to indicate special features or capabilities.

“h” = Hybrid

Like RX 450h: Indicates a hybrid powertrain combining gasoline and electric power.

“F” = Performance

Like RC F: Designates high-performance variants with enhanced power and handling.

“AWD” = All-Wheel Drive

Like NX 350 AWD: Indicates power distribution to all four wheels for improved traction.

Putting It All Together

Now you can decode any Lexus model designation by understanding each component.

Example: RX 350h AWD

  • RX =Radiant Crossover (mid-size SUV)
  • 350 =3.5 liter engine (medium power range)
  • h =Hybrid (gasoline-electric powertrain)
  • AWD =All-Wheel Drive (power to all wheels)

So it’s a mid-size SUV with a medium-range hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive capability.
